Famous Cases of the Supreme Court
Miranda v. Arizona- Mr. Miranda was arrested for kidnapping and assualt. He signed a confession without being told his legal rights. He stated that he should have been told his legal rights before confessing his guilt. The supreme court stated that, "It's a violation of the 5th and 6th amendment rights." A person in custody needs to be aware of their rights before anything is done. Miranda won.
Tinker v. Des Moines- The Tinkers (John and Marybeth) and their friend (Chris Eckhardt) wore black armbands to school in protest of the Vietnam war and supporting the truce called by Robert F. Kennedy. With the help of their parents, the families argued that the kids had the right to wear the armbands in school. The supreme court stated that they could wear the armbands because of their 1st amendment rights. Tinker won.
Roe v. Wade- Mrs. Roe became pregnant and wanted an abortion, and said she was raped in Texas. No report was filed on it(the statement was false), so she went to the district courts with attorney's trying to get the priviledge of having an abortion. The supreme court stated that a women could have an abortion because abortion is a fundamental right. Roe won.
U.S. v. Nixon- President Nixon was involved with the watergate scandal, and had secret recordings stashed away about the watergate scandal. The U.S. claimed that Nixon needed to turn in the recordings as evidence against during the impeachment process. The supreme court ruled that the tapes had to be turned in or released to the public. U.S. won.
Citizens United v. F.E.C- Citizens United wanted companies and groups to be able to donate as much money as they want to campaigns and other government races. F.E.C was against citizens united. The supreme court ruled that companies and groups could indeed donate as much money as they want to campaigns, etc. Citizens United won.
